Shockwave Therapy

What is Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave treatment involves the application of short, frequent, and high intensity bursts of mechanical energy, in the form of a shockwave, into soft-tissue that is injured, scarred, painful, inflamed and/or contains adhesions. Shockwave incorporates a rapid high frequency vibration in the form of Radial Pressure Waves (RPW). When applied by a trained practitioner, shockwave increases local blood flow, improves healing response, breaks down scar tissue and adhesions, reduces muscle spasm, and directly decreases pain. Patients tolerate the treatments well, and occasionally report mild discomfort.

Effects of Shockwave Therapy?

  • New blood vessel formation  – Creation of micro-ruptures in both the tendon and bone
  • Chronic inflammation reversal – Increase in mast cells
  • Stimulation of collagen production – Acceleration of pro-collagen synthesis
  • Breakdown of calcified fibroblasts
  • Dispersion of pain mediator –  Substance P, a neurotransmitter, is interrupted
  • Trigger point release – Unblocking of calcium pump which promotes a healthy metabolic process in microfilaments

Does it Really Work?

There have been many studies which illustrate the effectiveness of Shockwave Therapy. Results from several studies report patient satisfaction of up to 90%. Studies also report the reduction and elimination of chronic pain, increase in range of motion and accelerated recovery for a wide range of conditions.
